Scoring made easy:

Impact: The easier one to score. If the image knocks your socks off then it deserves a high score. If not, mark it on the ‘wow’ factor effect it has on you.

Quaility This section is on the quality of the print, the paper it is printed on and could even be its sharpness.

But also consider what the photographer intended when he took the image. Was it supposed to be blurred? That is down to how you see the image and whether you think it works, and if it was meant to be sharp or blurred.

Composition: Does its layout work for the image? Have rules been followed or nicely ignored?

A few simple rules to follow:
a) Score the image on the above three sections;
b) NEVER score the image on whether you like the subject or not;
c) Zero’s or noughts should only be given if an image does not meet the nights theme (very rare)i.e., off theme 3 x 0;
d) Ones should only be given if the image meets the theme but is very bad in that section;
e) Twos to fives are for how you see the image under each section.
